The History of The Devil
Mask Creator
The History of The Devil ( C.Barker), produced by Title 66 Productions, is a fantasy play, who’s narrative expands over thousands of years. With only nine actors in the production, the choice of masks was made to present all thirty-five characters. The following is a sampling of twenty-five masks created for the production, created by myself, Joshua Cape and assisted by John Leberg.
As the direction was in a Brechtian style, the design was meant to demonstrate the interplay between modern and classic theatre performance. The execution of these masks were inspired by the painterly theatricality of theatre designer Desmond Heeley. The masks were created out of masking tape, aluminum foil and fabric to create a cohesive look and texture amongst the multitude of opposing characters. This production will be remounted in July 2013 as part of the Fantasia Film Festival in Montreal, QC, Canada.
